Did You Know That Myopia Is Skyrocketing in the US & Canada?

boy wearing contacts

50% of the global population is expected to be myopic by 2050.

Not only does it cause nearsightedness and make it harder to see far away objects, but myopia is also associated with other conditions, such as:

  • Retinal atrophy
  • Macular degeneration
  • Higher risk of glaucoma
  • Greater likelihood of retinal detachment
  • Lattice degeneration

That's why it is critical to do something about your myopia right away!

How Orthokeratology Slows Myopia Progression

Imagine waking up every morning with clear and sharp vision. Thanks to these specialty lenses, you don’t have to wear glasses or contacts during the day, and best of all — this treatment is surgery-free!

Moreover, Ortho-K slows or halts eye elongation in children and teens, which radically reduces the risk of myopia progression!

Children and adults with myopia can use Ortho-K lenses to reshape the cornea. Simply insert at night before going to bed and remove them in the morning to see clearly.

Here's How Ortho-K Works

  • Worn While You Sleep

Insert these custom-designed gas permeable lenses at night before going to bed.

  • Change the Shape of the Cornea

Ortho-K lenses reshape your cornea overnight so you can see clearly the following day!

  • Enjoy Clear Vision the Next Day

Remove the lenses in the morning and see clearly during the day, without the need for glasses or contact lenses.

  • Slow Myopia Progression

Ortho-K slows myopia progression in children as young as 8. This lowers their risk of macular degeneration, glaucoma and retinal detachment later in life.

Ortho-K FAQs

Am I a candidate for Ortho-K?

Most people with mild to moderate myopia, with mild astigmatism and some cases of presbyopia are good candidates for Ortho-K. Children over the age of 8 and young adults who want to be free of glasses and contacts but who are not good candidates for refractive surgery due to age or other reasons (i.e., severe dry eyes, high costs, health risks) often are good candidates. Those who lead active lifestyles and who participate in contact sports also benefit from Ortho-K.

Can I use Ortho-K if I have astigmatism?

Our practice has seen fantastic results in patients with mild astigmatism, but high astigmatism is normally more complex in the design and fit. We can design a mold for your specific cornea, but it will depend on the individual case. An in-person consultation and eye evaluation at Coventry EyeCare Associates in Crystal Lake will allow us to better determine whether it's feasible.

How long does it take for Ortho-K to work?

Our patients consistently report improved vision after using Ortho-K. Some patients can experience perfect vision after a day or two of overnight Ortho-K. But higher prescriptions can take 2 or more weeks for maximum correction. Keep in mind that the refractive state regresses to pretreatment levels once the lens is no longer worn.

Can I use Ortho-K lenses if I have dry eye syndrome?

Ortho-K lenses don't aggravate dry eyes, since tear evaporation, a main cause of dry eye, doesn't occur when the eyes are closed during sleep. However, those with severe dry eyes may apply artificial tears or other drops before inserting Ortho-K lenses at night. Dry eyes resulting from arthritis or collagen-vascular disease may interfere with this treatment, but this can be determined during the eye doctor's assessment.

Does Ortho-K Hurt?

Ortho-K lenses do not hurt and should not hurt. Certain people may feel a slight foreign body sensation, but with time, the eyes become [desensitized] to the lenses.

REVIEW UPDATE: I wanted to change my review to 5 stars. The office manager, I believe her name was D... eb, reached out to me and went above and beyond to apologize. I still feel confident recommending Conventry to anyone I know. Customer service here has always been great and they have turned my experience into something positive. I have come here for a couple years and have always liked it as well as liking their doctors. But this last year after using a new prescription of contacts I noticed a lot of problems with my right eye. Nothing major at first to notice really, but after about 5-6 months I realized how blurry my vision was. I’ve had bad experiences in the past with eye doctors (not here) who would downplay minor concerns I’ve had with the strength of my prescription, or tell me my actual prescription has actually lowered not increased. With that in mind I’ve figured I would just trust my eye doctor at eye conventry and the issues with my right eye was probably just natural degeneration from age. I told myself I would bring it up at my next eye doctor appointment as long as there was no pain. Another thing I’ve also had a big increase of migraines this year, more than I’ve ever had. I actually also hit a curb which popped my tire in the right side of my car from my blurry vision. I just figured all this was random things not connected with one another. At my yearly doctor appointment Saturday, they noticed me struggle with my right eye even with my contacts. After getting put into a room they asked me multiple questions about my right eye. I had mentioned how it had really bothered me but I just figured it was in my head or I would just a night prescription. They focused a lot of questions on my right eye which actually scared me, I started to think there may actually be something seriously wrong. After about 5 minutes l the doctor arrived and continued asking me questions about my right eye which was increasing my anxiety about something being wrong. The doctor seemed nervous right from the beginning and after asking some more questions, he finally admitted that they had made a clerical error on my prescription. He seemed to change the subject rather quickly and I was just relieved that I was okay. After a few minutes I realized how weird a clerical error sounded and rounded back and asked what the actual error was. Apparently the prescription they gave me had my Y axis as 1.0, what it was supposed to actually be is a 10!!!! I started to ask more questions if this is why I’ve had so many migraines this year, and was this why I struggled so much to see things, and he said yes this could have caused all of this. He also admitted that he’s not sure how this happened, he even double checks all prescriptions but somehow they messed up. Again me being relieved that nothing was wrong I let it go. But days later the more think about the more upset I am getting. I struggle financially so to realize I paid over $700 for contacts that were so completely wrong, to pay for something that caused me constant migraines which resulted in me needing to call off work, and for me realize this contributed to me having a hard time seeing and hitting a curb. I wasn’t offered replacement contacts or a discount on the exam or a real apology, I just seemed like such a minor thing to them. I really trusted this eye doctor and I understand mistakes happen, but this really affected me for almost a full year. I still have to use these contacts!!! I need to save replace them with my new prescription which will be again over $700, so until then these are all I have.I wish they could have done more to rectify this and I very disappointed.

Wonderful experience here with my young son. Everyone was so friendly, communicative, helpful, and c... omforting. I was blown away with the fact that the doctor and staff focused on the “ whole” child and not just his eyes. The patience, friendly demeanor, and child like conversation with the doctor kept my son engaged and cooperative. As a mother, I was comfortable and appreciative of the doctors approach of not only being a professional but a parent, too. We will be back!

I recently moved out of Crystal Lake and I live about 25 miles away but will continue to use them for my vision/eyeware needs.
